Turing Selected for the Second Period of the Domestic Generative AI Development Project “GENIAC”Leveraging Large-Scale Cloud Computing Resources to Advance the Development of Multimodal Foundation Models

Turing Inc. (Headquarters: Shinagawa, Tokyo; CEO: Issei Yamamoto; hereinafter “Turing”) is pleased to announce its selection for the Second Period of the domestic generative AI development project “GENIAC,” promoted by the Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry (METI) and the New Energy and Industrial Technology Development Organization (NEDO). With this selection, Turing will receive support equivalent to 520 million yen in GPU computing resources and funding for dataset construction, advancing the development of multimodal foundation models with the goal of fully autonomous driving.

This marks the second time Turing has been selected, following its inclusion in the First Period announced in February this year.

For details on Second Period selection results, please visit: https://www.nedo.go.jp/news/press/AA5_101790.html

About the Project

The goal of this project is to develop multimodal foundation models that can replace human driving in any environment. These models will possess advanced cognitive, comprehension, and decision-making capabilities, allowing them to act in the real world. The models will be able to integrate text, video, and sensor data, predict the movements of surrounding objects and changes in the environment in real-time, and operate effectively in complex driving scenarios. The development process will be based on large-scale multilingual language models to enhance the understanding of visual information and natural language, 3D spatial recognition, and prediction of environmental changes grounded in physical laws.

About GENIAC

GENIAC (Generative AI Accelerator Challenge) is a project jointly implemented by METI and NEDO to strengthen the development capabilities of generative AI in Japan. The project primarily provides computing resources for developing core foundation models technologies for generative AI and support feasibility studies for the utilization of data and AI.

About Turing

Turing is a startup dedicated to developing fully autonomous driving technology. We are creating an End-to-End (E2E) autonomous driving system capable of making all necessary driving decisions (steering, acceleration, braking, etc.) using only data from cameras. We are driving innovation in the autonomous driving domain by developing multimodal generative AI models like “Heron,” generative world models like “Terra” that can generate realistic driving scenes as videos, and the “CoVLA Dataset,” which can describe driving environments in natural language and generate optimal route plans. Our goal is to develop fully autonomous vehicles without steering wheels by 2030.
