Turing Selected by the Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry and NEDO to Develop Competitive Generative AI Foundation ModelsUtilizing 740 million yen in GPU computing resources for AI training
Turing Inc. (Shinagawa-ku, Tokyo; CEO: Issei Yamamoto; hereinafter “Turing”) announces its selection as a grant recipient to develop competitive generative AI foundation models by the Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry and the National Research and Development Agency New Energy and Industrial Technology Development Organization (NEDO). Turing will advance the research and training of sophisticated multimodal models to develop fully autonomous EVs. The goal of this initiative is to construct a foundational AI model capable of complex processing by integrating visual and textual information to enhance autonomous driving technology.
Grant Project Overview
This project is part of the “Post-5G Information and Communications Systems Infrastructure Enhancement R&D Project/Development of Post-5G Information and Communications Systems/Development of Multimodal Foundation Models for Fully Autonomous Driving” and targets the R&D of generative AI foundation models. It provides substantial computing resources to developers to create internationally competitive AI.
From February to August 2024, Turing will utilize 740 million yen of computing resources, funded by the Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry and NEDO to develop large-scale foundation models essential for the development of fully autonomous EVs.

The Relationship Between LLM and Fully Autonomous Driving
Large Language Models (LLMs) are AI models that learn from large amounts of text data to generate human-like text and answer questions. Turing believes that fully autonomous driving requires an AI that understands the world at least as well as humans do, and is developing multimodal models such as LLMs to comprehend the world at a very high level through language.

Comment from CEO Issei Yamamoto:
Turing is committed to developing advanced multimodal AI models, including the release of the multimodal learning library ‘Heron’ and the construction of the large GPU cluster ‘Gaggle Cluster,’ for the mass production of fully autonomous EVs by 2030. This grant will allow us to accelerate our development. Under our mission “We Overtake Tesla,” we strive to enrich people’s lives by providing safe and sustainable mobility solutions.
About Turing
Turing is startup with the stated mission, “We Overtake Tesla.” Their goal is to mass-produce fully autonomous EVs. It was co-founded in 2021 by Issei Yamamoto, developer of the AI shogi program “Ponanza” and a specially-appointed associate professor at Nagoya University, and Shunsuke Aoki, who earned his Ph.D. researching autonomous driving at Carnegie Mellon University. Turing is using deep learning AI technology to create a comprehensive autonomous driving society.
