Turing Develops AI Technology for Traffic Light RecognitionLeveraging Their In-House Database to Support Traffic Light Recognition Across Japan
Turing Inc. (Kashiwa City, Chiba; CEO: Issei Yamamoto; hereinafter referred to as “Turing”) is using their proprietary AI technology to develop a high-precision model for traffic light detection using its own driving data database (currently at 1000 hours of driving data). The goal is to integrate this technology into the autonomous driving system without requiring additional sensor or roadside infrastructure equipment.
Traffic Light Recognition Technology Development
Turing is committed to creating a fully autonomous driving system that mirrors human judgment and intellect. Recognizing traffic signals is a crucial component, but faces challenges such as reliance on training data predominantly collected in the US and China, hardware differences among domestic traffic lights, and understanding complex signals. These challenges have limited the development of AI technologies and deep learning models suitable for use in Japan. Instead of installing additional sensors or infrastructure, Turing decided to develop technology that uses the cameras installed on the vehicles to recognize traffic signals, reducing implementation costs and ensuring our autonomous driving technology can operate across regions.
About Turing’s Traffic Light Recognition Technology Development
Turing has annotated 15,000 images and developed an AI traffic light recognition model for Japan. For a detailed look at the development process, our development team has posted a technical article:

Developing and implementing an AI-based camera-based traffic light recognition algorithm will allow us to create a cost-effective, scalable, autonomous driving system that does not require additional investment in traffic infrastructure.
About Turing’s “Brain Team”
The Brain Team, led by Director of AI Yu Yamaguchi, includes engineers specialized in machine learning, MLOps, cloud computing, and image recognition. They are working on research and development projects to implement machine learning-based autonomous driving systems and are currently collecting driving data. We continue to push forward with development activities to achieve full autonomy.

About Turing
Turing is startup with the stated mission, “We Overtake Tesla.” Their goal is to mass-produce fully autonomous EVs. It was co-founded in 2021 by Issei Yamamoto, developer of the AI shogi program “Ponanza” and a specially-appointed associate professor at Nagoya University, and Shunsuke Aoki, who earned his Ph.D. researching autonomous driving at Carnegie Mellon University. Turing is using deep learning AI technology to create a comprehensive autonomous driving society.
