Autonomous EV Developer Turing Collaborates with Taxi App S.RIDE on Autonomous DrivingJointly conducting road data collection for practical and safe autonomous driving
Turing Inc. (Shinagawa-ku, Tokyo; CEO: Issei Yamamoto; hereinafter “Turing”), a company committed to the development and sales of fully autonomous electric vehicles, is collaborating with S.RIDE Inc. (Headquarters: Minato-ku, Tokyo; CEO: Yohei Hashimoto; hereinafter “S.RIDE”), provider of the taxi app “S.RIDE®.” They are conducting a joint project to collect learning data for autonomous driving AI development with Daiwa Motor Transportation Co., Ltd. (Koto-ku, Tokyo; President: Kazuki Otsuka; hereinafter “Daiwa Motor Transportation”).
Overview of the Data Collection Project
S.RIDE proposed using taxi sensing data to develop autonomous driving technology, and Turing installed their data collection kits in taxis operated by Daiwa Motor Transportation. From January to February 2024, they conducted a pilot program to collect public road driving data during actual taxi operations. The data will be analyzed for content and driving conditions to accelerate development of foundational models for fully autonomous driving.
Background
Turing is developing an End-to-End (E2E) autonomous driving model that makes all necessary driving decisions (steering, braking, accelerating, etc.) based on data from cameras by acquiring a vast amount of driving data from human-operated vehicles. Turing has built a driving data database that currently contains 10,000 hours of information.
Enormous amounts of data are required for practical and safe autonomous driving. Turing will deepen its long-term collaboration with S.RIDE to collect data, including different times of day, weather conditions, complex road environments, and regional characteristics to achieve fully autonomous driving.
