Turing Commences Development of Domestic Large Language Model (LLM) for Autonomous EVs

Turing Corporation, based in Kashiwa City, Chiba and led by CEO Issei Yamamoto, announces the commencement of development on a domestic Large Language Model (LLM) essential for achieving fully autonomous vehicles.

Relationship Between LLM and Fully Autonomous Driving

A Large Language Model (LLM) is an AI model that learns from vast amounts of text data to generate human-like text and answer questions. Turing believes that LLMs are crucial for achieving fully autonomous driving for the following reasons:

  • Fully autonomous driving requires an AI that understands the world to an extent equal to or greater than humans.
  • The power of LLMs lies in their ability to perceive and comprehend the world around them through language.
  • LLM allows autonomous driving AIs to understand the world as humans do.

Characteristics of Turing’s LLM

Turing is focusing on the following three aspects while developing their LLM:

1.Adaptability to the Real World:
The goal is to develop a multimodal AI that understands real-world information, such as visual and audio data, allowing the autonomous driving AI to act appropriately in different situations.

2.Real-time Performance and Computational Efficiency:
Instantaneous decision-making is critical while driving, requiring technologies that can compute efficiently and perform actions in real-time. This includes model compression and optimization for onboard hardware.

3.Safety and Robustness:
The technology must defend against external environmental threats and system attacks, and must be capable of responding appropriately to unforeseen circumstances.

Turing plans to research and develop LLMs to advance AI technology for autonomous driving.
