Turing Unveils Their ‘Fully Autonomous EV’ Concept Car, Designed Using AIA World First in Car Design Using Image Generation AI ‘Stable Diffusion’

Turing Inc. (Kashiwa City, Chiba; CEO: Issei Yamamoto; hereinafter “Turing”) has unveiled a concept car for its ‘Fully Autonomous EV,’ designed entirely using the image generation AI ‘Stable Diffusion.’

This concept car encompasses Turing’s vision of a ‘Fully Autonomous EV’ and their goal to sell 10,000 units by 2030. The car design process utilized Stable Diffusion for static images, digital modeling, CG rendering, creating full-color 3D printed scale models, running animations, and AR data, marking this as a ‘world first’ in car design (based on company research as of March 2023).

The AI-Driven Concept Car Design Process

The design was a collaborative effort between Turing and the Nichinan Corporation (https://www.nichinan-group.com/index.html), who has years of experience in car design. After aligning on a design direction, both parties extracted multiple keywords, converted them into Stable Diffusion prompts, and generated images. These images were categorized and used to refine prompts, which then regenerated the images multiple times before finalizing the two-dimensional design. From there, manual adjustments, digital modeling, and CG rendering processes were used to create three-dimensional design data.

Comment from Yoshiichi Saruwatari, Director of Design/Engineering Division, Nichinan Corporation:

“This project demonstrates the incredible speed and power of AI design, combining human intelligence (HI) and digital work (DX). We are proud to present this project with Turing, an AI-native company, which produced an impressive array of deliverables (3D CAD data, CG renderings, running animations, full-color 3D printed scale models, VR/AR content) in just a month and a half. It is an honor to unveil this project, which sets the highest standards in the inaugural year of AI design.”

About Turing’s AI-Native Business Advancements:

Turing employs AI in many of its operations, such as using Stable Diffusion in the design process of the emblem mounted on THE FIRST TURING CAR and using ChatGPT to name its ‘Turing Kashiwa Nova Factory.’ Turing continues to push an ‘AI-native’ approach forward across all facets of its business.

About Turing

Turing is startup with the stated mission, “We Overtake Tesla.” Their goal is to mass-produce fully autonomous EVs. It was co-founded in 2021 by Issei Yamamoto, developer of the AI shogi program “Ponanza” and a specially-appointed associate professor at Nagoya University, and Shunsuke Aoki, who earned his Ph.D. researching autonomous driving at Carnegie Mellon University. Turing is using deep learning AI technology to create a comprehensive autonomous driving society.
