About the "Development of AI Foundation Models to Achieve Fully Autonomous Driving"
This project focuses on developing AI foundation models for fully autonomous driving. Turing will conduct a data collection, neural network development, and edge device implementation cycle with the goal of developing an E2E autonomous driving system capable of running for 30 minutes without human intervention in Tokyo's complex urban environments during the grant period.
Step 1: Develop an E2E Autonomous Driving System Capable of Solving Tasks through Active Learning
Turing will use on-road driving data to develop an E2E autonomous driving system based on AI foundation models capable of solving tasks via active learning. Evaluating the AI's control capabilities in virtual environments will allow Turing to improve the system's accuracy and enhance control of real-world vehicles. The system will use imitation learning to add new data and strengthen adaptability to improve system performance in challenging driving scenarios.
Step 2: Evaluate and Improve Autonomous Driving through On-Road Testing
Turing will use on-road driving tests to evaluate the system's adaptability to real-world scenarios. This evaluation will combine quantitative assessments based on the system's ability to complete predefined tasks and qualitative assessments through human observation. The cycle of data collection, active learning and evaluation will be repeated to refine the model.
About DTSU
NEDO supports "Deep Tech Startups," which focus on innovative technologies requiring long-term research, development, and significant funding to address pressing socio-economic challenges on a national or global scale. DTSU coordinates with venture capitalists and utilizes stage-gate reviews. It provides support in three phases: STS (early-stage applied research and development), PCA (late-stage applied research and development), and DMP (mass production verification), providing long-term support for applied research, mass production validation, and overseas technology demonstrations.
About Turing
Turing is a startup dedicated to developing fully autonomous driving technology. We are creating an End-to-End (E2E) autonomous driving system capable of making all necessary driving decisions (steering, acceleration, braking, etc.) using only data from cameras. Through the development of multimodal generative AI models like "Heron" and generative world models like "Terra," which understand complex real-world interactions, we will innovate in the autonomous driving domain and develop fully autonomous vehicles without steering wheels by 2030.
